Is this the end of broadcasting as we know it?

Is this the end of broadcasting as we know it?:
Is this the end of broadcasting as we know it?
One phrase you’ll hear a lot wherever the broadcast industry gathers is ‘disruptive technologies’, by which people typically mean that the internet is challenging all the business models and assumptions that have powered the industry for decades. With recent news that BitTorrent is now muscling in on their space, it might have to reach for a new, more apocalyptic description.

Technicolor - a company that has been around for over 95 years dealing with the science of film coloring – is entering the DSLR world once again.
Their first foray into digital cinema game happened when they introduced the CineStyle Camera Profile for use with Canon HDDSLRs, and that was quite a success given how well adopted that picture style has become.
Now they are introducing a color correction tool that I think many of you will find of interest:  CineStyle Color Assist and it’s available for an incredibly reasonable $99.00 on their new website.  Additionally CineStyle Looks packages are also available for $19.00.

Mac vs. PC - The Dilemma of a Small, One-Man-Band Production House:
We are faced with decisions daily. Pepsi or Coke? Short-sleeves or long-sleeves? Mac or PC?
But as a small production company, the answer to the last question is not as easy as it might sound.
Let me first give you some background. I started my own production company in May 2011, with the following goal: to provide affordable, personable, and highly professional video production for medium to large businesses. To deliver a professional product to my clients, I needed to find a way to get the best editing equipment I could, but at a fraction of the cost of a huge editing suite.

Okay, just a quick tip I worked out yesterday while I was trying to organize dailies for a documentary I am working on.  The producer/directors had organized everything I needed to build out the Avid project on a hard drive: hours and hours of Quicktimes, all sorted out by subject or location.  I was going to import them in one fell swoop, but I needed some way to organize the media once it came into the Avid.  As it was, all the media arrived in one big bin.  This is where the UNC File Path comes in.

A Video Workflow for the RED

A Video Workflow for the RED:
When doing looks with r3d files, we light the scene ideally with the subjects in there, create a test clip, put it to the computer and then apply color work on it. You can judge the exposure from there, or use the built in camera tools, then apply your look, get it approved, and then start applying that to the rest of the clips and do match from there.  You can do your looks via Redcine X Pro, third party software like Scratch Lab, Da Vinci Resolve, Colorfront OSD/EXD, etc. Generally, you have access for metadata controls for the RAW to baseline your look, before you apply RGB alterations to it. This can produce cleaner, better results when working with r3d because you aren’t jumping into forcing the values.

There is no doubt that we are in the midst of a rapid evolution of codec design. Traditional codecs, some might call them legacy codecs, are gaining evolutionary improvements. These codecs include HDCAM, AVC-Intra 50 and 100 as well as AVCHD 1.0. This article will, after a brief overview of AVC-Intra and ProRes 422 as well as the new sensors that drive codec evolution, focus on AVC-Ultra. There are five flavors of ProRes 422 in comparison to uncompressed video.

OLED technology outperforms LCDs; it has a smaller and lighter form factor and is beginning to reach parity from a price perspective. In 2011, over 100m OLED displays were shipped into the smartphone, handheld game and digital camera market and in 2012 that number will double, and in addition there will be new applications such as tablets and TVs. Revenues are expected to grow from ~US$4B in 2011 to over US$8B in 2012. Another market being addressed exclusively by Sony is the cinematic monitor, which takes advantage of three OLED attributes.

The issue of where you put your stuff

RedShark News - The issue of where you put your stuff:
The relatively short lifetime of digital imaging has been a fascinating time indeed. Digital images have now become the standard - despite the better quality potential of film-based imaging. Digital media handling is certainly more attractive in the short term - footage can be reviewed immediately after shooting and no film processing steps are required. Digital footage can be acquired, ingested into an editing suite and output to BluRay in an end-to-end digital workflow - and all done quickly. The same media can be easily converted into any number of formats, for use from broadcast television to web publication. Plus there are no noxious chemicals being used in a darkroom. It is clear that digital imaging has many advantages. Image quality however has not been one of them.

bitdepthpostBesides resolution (the number of pixels) and color mode (the way colors are processed), one other variable affects image quality. Bit depth measures how much color is available for display or printing of each pixel. A greater bit depth means each pixel contains more information for describing the color.
