Use Dynamic Link to bring Warp Stabilizer to Premiere Pro CS5.5

Use Dynamic Link to bring Warp Stabilizer to Premiere Pro CS5.5: Warp Stabilizer was arguably the biggest addition to After Effects CS5.5. Once you understand how to use it, it’s a tool that can change the way you shoot; if you find yourself without a tripod or any kind of stabilization with a camera as notoriously unsteady as a DSLR, even on a moving shot, you can end up with footage that can look as if a dolly or SteadiCam were used to take it.

Hard Drive Shortages to Drive Up Cost of Video Editing

Hard Drive Shortages to Drive Up Cost of Video Editing: Over the past year the hard drive producers have been hit by a one-two punch that has them scrambling to find ways to produce enough hard drives to satisfy demand. Hard drives prices are expected to jump up by 20% or more over the next week, with no end in sight.

PsF’s missing workflow, Part 2: the Canon XA10 camera

PsF’s missing workflow, Part 2: the Canon XA10 camera: At US$1,999 street price including balanced XLR audio inputs, the Canon XA10 AVCHD camera is quite interesting from several perspectives, and that’s probably why so many of my consulting clients who favor 25p or 29.97p and need balanced audio have chosen it. The XA10 reminds me of a shrunken, sexier-looking Panasonic AG-HMC40. The XA10’s CMOS...

Useful Tools for Editors: Project X27

Useful Tools for Editors: Project X27:
Project X27
In the ongoing saga of Final Cut Pro X comes one of the first third-party tools based on the newly released FCPX XML format. XML came to FCPX in the version 10.0.1 update just a month ago. Project X27 is a $50 translation tool that comes from Intelligent Assistance. The company is no stranger to XML and has produced many helpful workflow tools for Final Cut Pro 7 (as well as Premiere Pro). Project X27 moves Final Cut Pro X timelines into Final Cut Pro 7. You might ask why someone would want to move an edit to FCP7. The short answer is there are a lot of places you can move a full project, or parts of a project, once it is in FCP7. For example, you can import FCP7 XMLs into Adobe Premiere Pro … and that means an easy link to After Effects from there.

Magic Lantern Firmware for Canon HDSLR’s

Magic Lantern Firmware for Canon HDSLR’s:
October 24, 2011
by Magic Lantern Firmware
Magic Lantern is an open platform for developing enhancements to the amazing Canon 5D Mark II and 550D/T2i digital SLRs. These cameras are “game changing” for independent film makers:
  • It allows the use of a wide range of lenses (anything that can be adapted to the EF mount).
  • The 5D’s 35mm full-frame sensor is larger than the RED ONE’s sensor, Super 35 film. It is approximately the size of VistaVision. This means shallower native depth-of-field than anything on the market, except for the Phantom 65.
  • The dynamic range and latitude are close to the capabilities of high-end HD cameras.
  • The low-light performance is currently unrivaled, even by the RED ONE.

PsF’s missing workflow Part 1: BENIGN PsF versus MALIGNANT PsF

PsF’s missing workflow Part 1: BENIGN PsF versus MALIGNANT PsF:

Here in Part 1 of PsF’s missing workflow, I’ll define two new terms I’m introducing: benign PsF and malignant PsF. Fortunately, both Adobe Premiere CS5.5 and Apple Final Cut Pro X handle benign PsF (progressive segmented frame) automatically in the most desired way. Unfortunately, neither of these programs handle malignant PsF properly. This means that —even with the latest software— it is your responsibility to avoid the multiple pitfalls of misinterpreting malignant PsF. You must be aware of it and take the necessary steps to counteract it. This article will cover Panasonic’s AVCHD/AVCCAM PsF status. Upcoming articles in this series will reveal the PsF status of other cameras and recorders, and the workflows & workarounds with popular editing software.

Sony PVM-1741 17" OLED Monitor - Rejected!

Sony PVM-1741 17" OLED Monitor - Rejected!:
I'm so bummed out about these. I ordered a few of them and finally took possession of one as they've been been back ordered for months because of the tragedy in Japan. I heard they were going to strobe but in practice, the flickering is unbearable for a client or director's monitor. If you're familiar with the 9" Sony OLED or have seen 24p video on older Sony Trimaster CRT's then you've seen the pulsing that happens when 24p material is displayed in 48 field interlace. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why these OLED's display 24p material like this and I don't really care enough to research it. All I know is it's very distracting. I tried the monitor out for a few hours in video village for a TV pilot I'm doing and several people from the network and production approached me and asked if there was something wrong with the camera or with my monitor. That's obviously not going to work. There are different menu settings for merging the fields to minimize this effect but I wasn't able to find one that I felt was satisfactory.

Hollywood’s Digital Dilemma | Digital Cinema Report - News. Perspective. Analysis.

Hollywood’s Digital Dilemma | Digital Cinema Report
As the digital cinema era enters a new phase – a phase driven now as much by fear as excitement – Hollywood faces a number of challenges and none of the obvious solutions is particularly ideal. That challenge is even greater outside North America and although there are many complications – in many cases the challenge is country-by-country – this dilemma can be summed up rather simply: digital technology invariably creates a demand for more content, not less, and yet Hollywood continues to make fewer movies each year. These two realities cannot co-exist for too long or Hollywood motion pictures will no longer be a viable, growing business. Put another way, there has to be a finite number of lowest-common-denominator comic book movies that will translate well enough to generate solid revenues in every country.

Mac Mini for pro video editing: a field report from Guatemala

Mac Mini for pro video editing: a field report from Guatemala:
image
Many readers of ProVideo Coalition magazine may recall my recent article Mac Mini w/Thunderbolt: preferred platform for many new editing systems. However, some of the readers had doubts, and one naysayer even dared to comment via LinkedIn: “This is hilarious garbage. No serious editor, in their right mind, would do this.” Another commenter via LinkedIn supposed that it would stand up for standard-definition video editing only, but would never work for HD 1080p editing. Fortunately, here is a detailed report from a very serious commercial production company in Guatemala, that has recently replaced two MacPro towers with Mac Mini i7 with Thunderbolt, together with a Thunderbolt RAID5 disk array, and a Thunderbolt-based professional audio/video i/o device. Here you’ll see the exact software and hardware configuration used, performance, and enthusiastic comments from the editor. On the other hand, you’ll even learn where not to use a Mac Mini.

Three Ways Camera Assistants Have to Adapt to Digital Cinema in Order to Survive

Whether you like it or not, the future of filmmaking comes in bits and bytes.
Digital cameras already outpace film cameras on the production lines and the feverity with which they are released and adopted is astounding.
But you don’t really care about all that fanboyism. You just want to get a phone call from a producer, get the gig, show up on set and start pulling focus. It doesn’t matter what camera you do it on.
Well, I’m here to tell you that it sort of does.
If you want to survive in the digital cinematography future as a camera assistant, there are a few things you’re going to need change. These adaptations may be easy for you, others may not, but all of them will play a crucial role in your career path.

Camera showdown: iPhone 4S vs. iPhone 4, Galaxy S II, Nokia N8 and Amaze 4G (video):
Siri's sweet and all, but for many of us that new eight megapixel sensor and f/2.4 aperture lens are what really makes Apple's iPhone 4S an appealing upgrade. We spent the weekend shooting around New York City with the iPhone 4S, along with some other top smartphones -- the iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S II, Nokia N8 and HTC's Amaze 4G -- in order to determine just which phone's camera reigns supreme. And in order to capture video and stills with consistent framing among all five devices, we secured each smartphone to that homemade quintuple cameraphone mount that you see above -- it may be an early prototype, but it got the job done. Jump past the break to see the results, and check out our comprehensive iPhone 4S sample gallery below.

Transcoding Showdown: The Best 5D Encoder

Transcoding Showdown: The Best 5D Encoder:

As all of us who’ve been working with 5D footage for a while know, transcoding your H.264 camera clips to ProRes is one of the necessary evils of the workflow (while you can now edit the native clips in software like Adobe Premiere CS5 or FCPX, I would argue that transcoding is still a requirement before color correction). What you may not know is that not all transcoders are created equally. I decided to test the transcode time, file sizes and quality of a few different programs, and the results may surprise you.

A lesson learned from my FCPX to Resolve roundtrips
I learned a hard lesson today about Final Cut Pro X after doing some roundtrip testing between FCPX and the newly released Resolve 8. That lesson was to be very careful when using clips that FCPX is referencing in other video applications. If some piece of metadata is modified in the file, even if the video stays exactly the same, FCPX may not be able to see it. Also, if you’re doing extensive audio mixing in FCPX be aware that the mixed clips won’t roundtrip.

Converting Avid Locators to DVD Studio Pro Chapter Markers | Evan's Editing Brain Dump

I have two methods for making DVDs for directors, depending on how quickly the DVD is needed and what quality level or features are required. For faster but lower-quality DVDs, I just play out to a standalone DVD Recorder. For higher-quality DVDs I usually export a Quicktime, run it through Compressor, and ultimately bring it into DVD Studio Pro. When I go the DVD Studio Pro route, I also like to take the opportunity to appropriately chapter my DVDs. It’s a pretty quick and easy thing to do, and provides a more meaningful set of chapter points than the automated ones you get on a standalone recorder. My favorite method for quickly chaptering a Quicktime uses Avid locators to provide Compressor and DVD Studio Pro with my chapter points. Below is the process I use, or for the shortcut just use the online tool I created.

Send timelines from FCPX to FCP7 and back thru Resolve 8.1!

Send timelines from FCPX to FCP7 and back thru Resolve 8.1!:
If you want to send your timeline from FCPX to FCP7 and back there's a solution and its easier than you might think - however version 8.1 of Resolve is needed. This is how the author describes it:
"Since version 8.1 Resolve can open and export FCP X XML format. This means that you can edit in FCP X, send the project to Resolve. The other cool thing is that Resolve can also generate and open FCP7XML. This means that you can now send timelines from FCPX to FCP7 and from FCP7 to FCPX thru Resolve."
Just check out the video below to see it for yourself:

As you can see it is as simple as that. If you use Resolve 8.1 and you want to transfer your timelines between FCP7 and FCPX it might be the perfect solution for you!

A Few Recent Avid Media Composer Finds

A Few Recent Avid Media Composer Finds
I’m just finishing up a three week edit using Avid Media Composer. I enjoy longer-form projects like this one as I always find myself learning something new about the non-linear editing tool that I’m using for that extended period of time. While I’m in and out of these editing tools nearly everyday (be it Avid, FCP or Premiere Pro) it’s a prolonged period in a single one of them that often revels something I never knew before. In this case it was some tips, tricks and tutorials about Media Composer.

The End of the Line for Film Cameras

The End of the Line for Film Cameras:
While the debate has raged over whether or not film is dead, ARRI, Panavision and Aaton have quietly ceased production of film cameras within the last year to focus exclusively on design and manufacture of digital cameras. That’s right: someone, somewhere in the world is now holding the last film camera ever to roll off the line.

Choosing a Solid State Drive for Video Recording

Choosing a Solid State Drive for Video Recording:
Recently, we have seen a wide variety of recorders being released that write video directly to Solid State Hard Drives (SSDs). These recorders include the Sound Devices PIX240, CineDeck, Atomos Samurai, the BlackMagic Hyperdeck Shuttle, and the Convergent Design Gemini 4:4:4. SSDs can be very fast and have become very price competitive compared to other memory cards. The high-speed Sandisk Extreme Pro Compact Flash cards that are required for ProRes recording cost around $7 per gigabyte, versus a comparable SSD that can be purchased for less than $2 per gigabyte. However, these drives were built to be used in computers, and it can be a bit confusing to choose the right drive for a video recorder.

CMOS Rolling Shutter

SENSOR ARTIFACTS AND CMOS ROLLING SHUTTER
While most of the camcorders on the market have traditionally used CCD sensors, many new camcorders are coming on the market are now using CMOS sensors. While CMOS and CCD both have unique properties that make each one suitable for one type of job or another, there are unique characteristics to each that need to be understood in order for a user to know whether a CMOS or CCD camera is more appropriate for the type of shooting they’ll be doing.

The 8-Megapixel camera in the iPhone 3S is amazingly good!

The 8-Megapixel camera in the iPhone 3S is amazingly good!:
We all know that digital cameras included in mobile phones are rather mediocre but what about the camera in iPhone 4S? Apple published on its website some photos taken with it - photos which have allegedly not been tampered with. All we can say is that they look simply stunning but we can be sure that they were taken in perfect daylight conditions and by professional photographers. So how good the camera really is? Here is some kind of answer - a one dollar bill in 3264x2448 resolution. Just tap or click on the picture below to see it in full size.

Camera Mapping in After Effects : Adobe After Effects Tutorial

Camera Mapping in After Effects : Adobe After Effects Tutorial
In this tutorial, Andrew Devis shows how to create parallax with a single item. Parallax is when items in a image appear to move in different ways to other parts of the same image. For example, the foreground items in view appear to move at a different speed or perspective to the background items in that same view. This can also be used to create the illusion of depth as different parts of an image can be projected to appear in different planes to other items. By using camera mapping we can project the image or footage onto screens we have set up which are at angles such that some items in our image or shot are at a different perspective to other items. This means that when we add a camera move into our scene parallax is achieved as the screens move in a different perspective to each other. Although a little tricky to set up at first, once used a few times this effect can really bring flat images to life and give a real sense of depth to your work.

Revving Up Your Editing Options: Editing Software Buyer’s Guide

Revving Up Your Editing Options: Editing Software Buyer’s Guide:
October 11, 2011
by Dave Sniadak, Videomaker.com
The road to editing greatness begins by shifting into the right gear. You can’t drive your projects forward with software that leaves your computer idling in neutral.
There’s an industry philosophy that says all good videographers and producers need to put themselves in the shoes of the editor before venturing out on location for a shoot. The editor is inevitably the one who has to deal with the hours of footage, countless retakes and painfully brutal mistakes made in the field. Thinking like an editor will help increase post-production efficiency, while keeping all members of the production team in good standing with each other.

In addition Resolve can easily apply a LogC to Rec709 LUT, and add a metadata slate on all the footage at once. This process works with both the full Resolve, and the free Resolve Lite.

Rotoscoping is the process of manually altering film or video footage one frame at a time. The frames can be painted on arbitrarily to create custom animated effects like lightning or lightsabres, or traced to create realistic traditional style animation or to produce hold-out mattes for compositing elements in a scene and, more recently, to produce depth maps for stereo conversion. fxguide updates an earlier article with new tools and a history of roto.

A short Q and A with Automatic Duck about their Adobe move
A bit of surprising news came across the tubes just the other day about one of the workhorse tool companies of post-production. That news was that Automatic Duck, and its founder and face man Wes Plate, had been scooped up by Adobe. It was quite a surprise to me as I have always seen Automatic Duck as a platform independent company. While they specifically made plugs-ins for Adobe After Effects and Apple Final Cut Pro these tools made it possible to to move edits into other systems including Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools as well as Quantel. And like that, Automatic Duck was gone … at least for a little while.
