Blackmagic ships first 6G-SDI products to simplify 4K cabling by Allan Tépper:
Up until recently, if you wanted to connect a 4K video signal from one device to another, you required four SDI cables per source. Blackmagic announces Production Camera 4K, $995 Pocket Cinema Camera with MFT mount (hands-on):
Blackmagic announces Production Camera 4K, $995 Pocket Cinema Camera with MFT mount handson videoA sub-$1,000 price tag makes any product a relative steal on the floor of NAB -- impressive specs and industry standard compatibility are just icing on the cake. If such figures are any indication, however, Blackmagic's new Pocket Cinema Camera, which leaked earlier today and ships in July, is potentially a very solid buy at $995, with a Super-16 Cinema 1080HD sensor with 13 stops of dynamic range, CinemaDNG RAW recording, SD card storage, Micro HDMI monitoring and a Micro Four Thirds lens mount.

Arri Alexa, RED Epic and Blackmagic Cinema Camera compared - video tests!

Arri Alexa, RED Epic and Blackmagic Cinema Camera compared - video tests! - motionVFX Blog:
"Some Like It RAW" is a mini-series of test videos, that tries to compare three great video cameras - the Arri Alexa, Blackmagic Cinema Camera, and the Red Epic. The goal of these tests was to explore how each camera handles real world shooting environments. All tests were performed by Ryan E. Walters, who is an award-winning cinematographer who did feature films, documentaries, commercials, and shooting for Comcast, TLC, Oxygen, and the Discovery Channel. His first video test was published a week ago and it focused on the IR filtration using Schneider ND's along with the Schneider IR Tuner Kit. The second video examines and compares how each of the three cameras performs in low light. Let's start with the newest test:

RED Epic versus Blackmagic Cinema Camera - workflow, footage quality and more!

RED Epic versus Blackmagic Cinema Camera - workflow, footage quality and more!: Andrew Reid posted a great comparison of the Blacmagic Cinema Camera and the RED Epic. A really interesting and informative material especially that many filmmakers wonder how the BMCC compares to a film industry standard. The RED Epic is obviously great, but isn't cheap, it also shoots 5K. Nevertheless the Blackmagic Cinema Camera is also pretty great. Andrew did many tests and he found out, that the BMCC can perform amazingly good - he found the low light performance astounding for such a small sensor.

Post workflow for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera

Post workflow for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera:
Having tested the BMC since quite a while now, I’m musing about the different options of post workflow.  There are different ways to skin the cat in the moment, and – as usual – all of them have their pros and cons.

UltraStudio 4K announced by Blackmagic at IBC 2012

UltraStudio 4K announced by Blackmagic at IBC 2012:
image
At IBC 2012, Blackmagic announced the US$1295 UltraStudio 4k audio/video i/o, which now represents the top end Thunderbolt device from the Australian company, which is now known not only for its interfaces, but also for its DaVinci Resolve software, cameras, and other products. Unlike prior UltraStudio Thunderbolt interfaces from Blackmagic, this is the first to have a 19-inch rack form factor. It is an obvious step up from its sister, the US$995 UltraStudio 3D, whose name sometimes confuses people, since it also handles 2D… and of course the UltraStudio 4K can also do 3D, and features an LCD monitor and hardware buttons for source selection. As you can imagine, the first question I asked Blackmagic was: Does the UltraStudio 4K offer digital RGB-over-HDMI? I asked on behalf of DreamColor owners, because the total price of the UltraStudio 4K is lower then the sum of the UltraStudio 3D plus the “Band-Aid” (the HDLink Pro 3D DisplayPort). Of course, I know that the HP DreamColor is not a 4K monitor (at least not the current one).

NAB 2012 applause! Blackmagic’s cinema camera uses HFS+ formatting rather than weak FAT32

NAB 2012 applause! Blackmagic’s cinema camera uses HFS+ formatting rather than weak FAT32:
image
As some of my colleagues at ProVideo Coalition magazine have already reported, at NAB 2012, Blackmagic announced its first digital motion picture camera, officially known as the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. For US$2999, Blackmagic gives you the camera, a license of DaVinci Resolve (US$995 value) and a license of UltraScope (US$695 value). Supply your own Canon EF or Zeiss ZE lens and recording media. I applaud Blackmagic for making one of the two best possible decisions regarding the formatting used on the removable SSDs (solid state drives), and for using standard códecs/file formats. Unlike what many traditional photo and video camera manufacturers have chosen to implement (the weak FAT32), Blackmagic chose to use HFS+ (aka HFS Plus or Mac OS Extended). In this first look, I’ll review the differences and advantages of either HFS+ or UDF over FAT32, and point out some other details, i.e. the audio connections and file formats.
