Missing Link between Canon 5D and Avid

Missing Link between Canon 5D and Avid by Steve Hullfish:
So, I’ve had my Canon 5D Mark II for a few years. I’ve used it on a few jobs that I’ve edited on Avid Media Composer or Symphony, but I never really cared whether the TOD timecode and other metadata came across from the .THM files that accompany the .MOV files that come from the 5D. I always either just used AMA to link to the .MOV files or imported them and converted them to DNxHD files (MXF) inside the application, losing all of the metadata of the .THMs.

Velarium is a new entry into the DIT data wrangling tool by Scott Simmons

Velarium is a new entry into the DIT data wrangling tool by Scott Simmons:
While not tool in a booth on the NAB show floor Elklight Software’s Velarium is another DIT -centric tool for the offload and transcoding of file-based, mainly DSLR, media. It takes a different approach than Red Giant Software’s BulletProof. Velarium is a more focused tool that presents a single-window approach to its task. The developer is based in my hometown of Nashville and I’ve been having a number of discussions about the tool and what I, as an editor, would expect in the files I receive for editorial. It looks like a promising product that’s going to be trying to find its way in the growing DIT offloading tools.

Fast DSLR Post Workflow: Ingest to Output » Rampant Design Tools Blog

Rampant Design Tools Blog » Fast DSLR Post Workflow: Ingest to Output » Rampant Design Tools Blog:
Hey friends, just thought I’d share how my team and I do our post production over at The Division. We are in production of several types of TV shows at the moment, but our specialty is Documentary style using DSLR cameras. A few things are really nice about Doc Style: It’s all handheld, no big equipment to complicate things. It’s pretty cheap to produce, and you can be forgiven a lot by simply saying: “It’s a reality show, it’s not gonna look perfect!”

DIGGING UP CANON DSLR METADATA - Little Frog in High Def

DIGGING UP CANON DSLR METADATA - Little Frog in High Def
Today I found out a neat trick…thanks to the Twitter-verse. That’s what I love about Twitter. I can post a quick thought, or some observation…OR…I can ask quick advice about a random topic and get an answer rather quickly. I don’t have to go looking for some specific forum and then post the question there, and hope someone knows the answer. I just throw the answer out there, and wait for someone to post the solution. Typically I get more than one answer, and I get the answer within minutes.

7 Tips for HD Color Correction and DSLR Color Correction

7 Tips for HD Color Correction and DSLR Color Correction:
Color correction is just one step of the entire filmmaking process…but oh, what a difference it can make. You can take average footage and really make it pop, sing and enhance the viewing experience of your project. If you have excellent footage, then the sky is the limit. You can also make images look garish, ugly and destroy all the hard work the crew did to capture those images on the day of the shoot. The challenges and choices are many and it comes with great responsibility if you are the one applying the Color Correction and Color Grade. In the indie film world, jobs are more often merged and unified and Color Correction is more and more falling into the hands of the Editor. The smaller the budget and tighter the deadline…the more often this becomes true. Shane asked me to take this opportunity and pass on some tips and tricks I have learned over the years of Coloring features, shorts, ads, music videos and documentaries.

Avid Media Composer 5 in a DSLR World

Avid Media Composer 5 in a DSLR World:
A few weeks ago I wrote a post called Avid Media Composer in a DSLR World which detailed the various workflow options for working with DSLR media (mainly from Canon’s insanely popular 5D and it’s siblings). HD Video Pro - Posting DSLRs | HDVideoPro.com

HD Video Pro - Posting DSLRs | HDVideoPro.com
It's edging close to the two-year mark since DSLRs were first used on professional motion-picture and TV productions. Back then, it was an open question whether DSLRs could find a home in mainstream production or whether using them constituted a one-off production trial. Equally important was whether the postproduction zeitgeist could easily adapt to some of the weaknesses inherent in the cameras themselves: issues of compression, rolling shutter and moiré/anti-aliasing, etc.

Magic Lantern for Canon DSLR Video Tutorial – Why and How…

Magic Lantern Firmware Wiki
Magic Lantern is a custom firmware add-on for Canon dSLR cameras. It is not a hack, or a modified firmware, but it runs alongside Canon's own firmware, booting from the card every time you turn the camera on. The only modification to the original firmware is the ability to boot software from the card.

The ins and outs of producing a feature-length DSLR movie

HD Video Pro - Make It Big | HDVideoPro.com
Even for the most inexperienced filmmakers, it's not too difficult to produce professional-looking footage with a DSLR for a short film. If you don't believe me, simply go to Vimeo and type "DSLR" in the search box. Literally thousands of shorts will appear, all shot with a DSLR, and many of them are of extremely high quality. Upon closer examination, you'll see many of the producers are not only amateurs, but some aren't even out of junior high. They make it look so easy that one may have the impression that anyone can achieve cinematic results with these cameras.
