Which is the Best RAID level for Video Editing and Post Production? (Part Three): Number Soup for the Soul:
In Part One and Part Two we ran the numbers on each RAID level to find out how well they performed on speed, capacity and failure rates as the drive sizes increased. In this final part we’ll try to put together a few rules of thumb to help guide us in selecting the right RAID level for video editing or post production.

Top 5 Reasons Your Storage Doesn’t Work for Video Editing

Top 5 Reasons Your Storage Doesn’t Work for Video Editing
If your storage system talks only about IOPS, bandwidths and latencies, with no mention of supported stream counts, you are probably looking at a storage system designed for enterprise IT applications; not real-time media editing.

Crossbar's RRAM to boast terabytes of storage, faster write speeds than NAND

Crossbar's RRAM to boast terabytes of storage, faster write speeds than NAN
Hardware makers often sing the praises of their latest and greatest flash memory, but the folks at Crossbar are ready to show them up with resistive RAM (RRAM) that they've been quietly working on. Compared to NAND, RRAM comes in at half the size and boasts 20 times faster write speeds (140MB/s), reads data at 17MB per second, guzzles 20 times less power and has 10 times more endurance. Since RRAM is non-volatile memory, it can keep data even when it's powered off, á la NAND. As if that weren't enough, 3D stacking construction allows for several terabytes of storage, endowing one 200 x 200mm 200mm2 chip with one terabyte.

How To Build A DIY 4K Raid..!

How To Build A DIY 4K Raid..!
As many of you may already know or should know...4K is here to stay! That's right...each year the past several we've been hearing and seeing more and more 4K buzz at big expos like CES and Nabshow especially. So far we've seen the 4K TV and Professional Monitors hit market each year but at a very high buy in price. Though more recently the hottest screen for the money is the the Seiki 4K going for around $1499(or less...I've seen them sell for as little as $1k on ebay). This has been one big issue with 4K still taking a long time to be embraced outside of the local Movie Theaters like Regal, AMC, or for me locally Cinetopia have all upgraded screens to 4K. This past Nabshow we also got another curve ball. Blackmagic Design introduced a 4K Cinema Camera to follow last years 2.5K for $3k camera. The exciting part is it's only $4K for 4K(you can learn more about it on my Blackmagic Booth vid). The other issue have been how do I play it out. Well more recently various companies are offering you options. Nvidia have several offering that will output 4K, Matrox as well with their 4K Mojito Card(also check out my booth vid for Matrox with Dan discussing their new 4K card), and again Blackmagic with their NewDeckLink 4K Extreme so as you can see you have options!

A Comparison of 10 Thunderbolt RAID Storage Solutions

A Comparison of 10 Thunderbolt RAID Storage Solutions | wolfcrow:
The way things are going, you could safely bet that you’ll always need more storage, never less. Nobody wants to transfer data every few months once their drives run out, and it is not always a good idea to put everything in internal drives because then it is totally dependent on your computer.

The Production Costs of 4K: From Acquisition to Archiving

The Production Costs of 4K: From Acquisition to Archiving | CineTechnica:
4K was the definitive buzzword at NAB this year, as well as CES, with a number of manufacturers releasing 4K televisions, 4K game systems, and 4K cameras. With the consumer demand for 4K content just around the corner, one of the most often asked questions is “How much is this gonna cost us?!” After polling a number of industry sources, I decided to try and break down the production costs of shooting, data management, dailies creation and archiving in 4K to show that it isn’t as intimidating as you might think.

Editing Storage in the Production Pits

Post Magazine - Editing Storage in the Production Pits:

Mac OS X Lions get native Ext file system access

Mac OS X Lions get native Ext file system access - The H Open: News and Features:
Paragon has updated its Linux file system driver for Mac OS X to support Lion and Mountain Lion. ExtFS for Mac OS X 9.0 provides complete read and write access for Ext2, Ext3 and Ext4 filesystems. Paragon's drivers make it possible to create files larger than 4 GB and supports automatic mounting. As a low level filesystem driver, Ext2/3/4 drives appear directly in the Finder and appear as native OS X drives. According to Paragon, there's minimal performance loss compared to HFS+.The company builds its Ext file system driver on its in-house universal filesystem driver which it also uses to deliver NTFS for Mac 10.0. The Paragon ExtFS costs $39.95 and a 10 day trial version is available.

SSDs vs. hard drives vs. hybrids: Which storage tech is right for you? | PCWorld:
In times past, choosing the best PC storage option required merely selecting the highest-capacity hard drive one could afford. If only life were still so simple! The fairly recent rise of solid-state drives and hybrid drives (which mix standard hard drives with solid-state memory) have significantly altered the storage landscape, creating a cornucopia of confusing options for the everyday consumer.
