I was happily installing the Mac OS 10.7 Lion update on my Mac Pro at home (Avid recently blessed Media Composer to run on 10.7) only to become somewhat less happy when I realized AirDrop, one of the features I was most looking forward to, won’t work with my Mac Pro. It apparently uses the WiFi built into the computer and can’t work through a network, even when the machine is connected to an Apple router. A little search verified that my Mac Pro won’t work since it doesn’t have a WiFi card installed.

DNxHD with Embedded Multichannel Audio
I am onlining a show that has a new delivery requirement…not tape, but rather a Quicktime file with embedded audio. OK, this isn’t new…this is new to Avid. This is something I have been doing for a while in FCP land. Delivering ProRes or HQ files with 8 to 12 channels of embedded audio. This is something FCP 7 does rather easily…it was designed to do this. I have a tutorial on how to do that here. But this is something Avid Media Composer doesn’t do at all. Sure, you can export a Quicktime file, but only with stereo audio. Avid MC was designed for many things…outputting to tape, spitting out EDLs for online, cut lists for film…but not Quicktime with embedded audio.

Dupe Guru Finds Duplicate Files Even When File Names Do Not Match
Dupe Guru is a simple duplicate file remover which, unlike many other duplicate file removing tools, uses fuzzy matching algorithm to scan multiple locations for duplicate files. The algorithm is smart enough to find not only the files with same type and name but can identify duplicates with different file attributes. The file finding mechanism is totally customizable, you can change the way it searches for duplicate files. Furthermore, the built-in reference directory and grouping system will prevent you from deleting those files which should not be deleted from the system.

What are the different types of metadata we can use in production and post production?
I’ve been thinking a lot about metadata – data about the video and audio assets – particularly since we use metadata extensively in our Intelligent Assistance software products and for media items for sale in Open TV Network. And the new “Faces” and “Places” features in iPhoto ’09 show just how useful metadata can be.

CF or SD corrupted?
So the worst case scenario has happened and after a day’s worth of filming for an all important client, you come back to the edit suite, connect your CF/SD card to your computer and then…. nothing happens. Your computer doesn’t detech your card or the video files have mysteriously disappeared. Your stomach takes a sky-dive and thoughts of the end of your career go through your head.
Quick Avid Tip: Display your UNC File Path in the bin!
Okay, just a quick tip I worked out yesterday while I was trying to organize dailies for a documentary I am working on. The producer/directors had organized everything I needed to build out the Avid project on a hard drive: hours and hours of Quicktimes, all sorted out by subject or location. I was going to import them in one fell swoop, but I needed some way to organize the media once it came into the Avid. As it was, all the media arrived in one big bin. This is where the UNC File Path comes in.

Simple Workflow for Removing 2:3 Pull Down
This is an old topic of discussion, but it always seems to come up again and again. Some cameras, such as Sony’s FS100, will record in 1080 24p, but output only 1080 60i over HDMI. The FS100 does this to make its output compatible with monitors and other devices. The internal video recording is true 24p, but the output has gone through a 2:3 pull down process, whereby the 24p is converted into 60i. Because 24 frames do not evenly split into 60 interlaced fields, this process stretches 24p into 60i which does result in some obvious interlacing artifacts. Here is a quick illustration showing how four frames (from 24p) split into interlaced fields.
For anyone wishing to record the HDMI signal coming out of the FS100, this can be a major headache. Recorders such as the Ki Pro Mini or the HyperDeck Shuttle can easily record the video coming out, but unfortunately they cannot remove the 2:3 pull down to convert the video back into 24p. Here are a couple quick examples of how to remove the pull down and get good results.

In case you missed it: 5DtoRGB v1.5
I believe it was about a year ago when the developers at Rarevision came out with their way of prepping HDSLR media for post, 5DtoRGB. If you have been on a Mac workflow and transcoding to ProRes either via MPEGStreamClip, Magic Bullet Grinder, a variation of a Compressor droplet, or using the Canon E1 Log & Transfer plugin in Final Cut Pro 7, you know the woes of the wicked Quicktime gamma shift. Since most if not all HDSLRs that record video are recorded in a compressed format either H.264 or some form of AVCHD, at an 8bit color depth and also have a heavy amount of chroma subsampling; post production with these cameras can be an experience that is less than desirable. I wont go into the specifics about what this all means but if you want to read more into the alchemy of HD formats check out this blog post by Andy Shipsides of Abel Cine Tech about HD formats.
Okay. So we know that we are starting with a compressed codec in a limited color space and bit depth. This is where 5DtoRGB comes in to play. See below:
After Effects Script of the Week: Immigration
Ask any veteran After Effects artist who uses scripts which ones should really be built right into the application and among the top handful for most artists will be Immigration. It provides an interface to work with image sequences, something that the file system (Finder or Windows Explorer) and Adobe applications which rely on it (all of them) doesn’t do well.

Calculating Timecode in Excel
Today I was contacted by a filmmaker friend that wanted to work out a way to calculate timecode within an Excel spreadsheet. Streamlining Color Correction in Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro has a full complement of tonality and color correction tools including about 40 tonality and color correction video effects and four vector and waveform scopes. Most video editors gaze upon all those possibilities and end up choosing the path of least resistance: automated effects. As for scopes…forget about it. Who can make heads or tails of them? Turns out, the dark art of color correction is not all that opaque.

Village Instruments CEO Promises Graphics Card Enclosure for Thunderbolt
Village Instruments currently makes the ViDock, a graphics enclosure that uses the ExpressCard interface - the new Thunderbolt ViDock will probably be similar in construction to the current model. Performance of the new Thunderbolt device should improve considerably, since Thunderbolt gives devices 10 Gb/s of bandwidth to work with, while ExpressCard devices can only use about a quarter of that.

A ProRes workflow end-to-end
With the radical change going on right now in the world of Final Cut Pro, I’ve had some FCP7 users ask me about maintaining an end-to-end ProRes workflow in Premiere Pro. There are questions whether it’s even possible. Well, I’m here to show you it IS possible, and how to make it go.

Scripting Video Changes in Lion: avconvert, pcastaction & podcast | Krypted.com
via @aPostEngineer
The avconvert command is a new addition in OS X Lion that allows administrators to quickly and easily convert video from one format to another using presets for video conversion. The presets are mostly common Apple formats tuned to specific devices.
In its simplest form, avconvert uses a preset, a source and then an output to convert the source to the output using the preset to define the format to use for conversion. A useful preset is the 640×480 one. To convert this using this idea:
/usr/bin/avconvert --preset Preset640x480 --source /Convert/test.mov --output Converted/test.mov

3D Mic Pro and immersive audio
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU WEAR HEADPHONES WHEN LISTENING TO THE VIDEO BELOW.
The basic thing you need to know about this microphone, is that it has two high quality mics that are spaced apart roughly the same distance as your ears are from one another. It also utilizes a sound modifier technology which captures immersive sound just like we hear it. Most, if not all mics out there are mono mics – and a normal stereo microphone cannot record the same information in the same manner. The beauty of this system is that you can handhold the Mitra mic or put it on a small tripod and let it roll. Just monitor your levels and you can have this incredibly immersive sound out of the box. You can then mix it into 5.1 if you want as well.

AVID MC TIP – Separating Media by Project
OK, to most of you from FCP land, keeping media separate by project is a no-brainer. Because FCP did that for you. In your Capture Scratch drive you had a Capture Scratch folder, and render folders, and in there you’d have different folders for different projects:
